The Web Gallery of Art is described as "a virtual museum and searchable database of European painting and sculpture of the Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, Neoclassicism, Romanticism periods (1000-1850)". It contains biographical information on several thousand artists together with over 24.000 reproductions [2010]. The database originated in 1996 and was created Emil Krén a retired Hungarian physicist and Dániel Marx, a researcher at the Department of Computer Science and Information Theory, Budapest University of Technology and Economics, Budapest, Hungary. It is a private initiative not related to any museums or art institutions, and not supported financially by any state or corporate sponsors. For a free-access site it is extraordinarily comprehensive and informative.

Currently [2010] contains 44,838 images of images of work by 575 contemporary Canadian visual artists in all media including painting, sculpture, printmaking, drawing, photography, collage, mixed media, bookworks, audio-visual, film, performance work, conceptual work, and applied arts (fibre, ceramics, glass, metal, wood and furniture). Each entry usually contains the artist's CV.

The aim of the African American Visual Artists Database (AAVAD) is to establish a free public access record of the ongoing contribution of artists of African decent to the visual arts. Included are all artists of the African diaspora who have lived, worked, studied or exhibited in the USA, Canada, and the Caribbean. Artists are eligible when they have been actively and professionally engaged in the production of work of art for a period of at least 4 years and are at least 21 years old. As of November 2009, the AAVAD contains data on nearly 12,000 artists. The amount of biographical information is limited. More useful as a source of bibliographical data.

A subscription-based online service that contains data on some c.80,000 painters and sculptors and some designers and craftspeople. Mainly includes US artists. Access is free on Fridays. The Smithsonian Institution Archives of American Art Oral History Project originated in 1958 and now includes interviews with many hundreds if not thousands of US artists, designers, craftspeople, photographers, arts administrators and educators. • The United States Air Force Art Collection

A major source of American aviation and combat art. Contains biographies of the many hundreds of artists whose work is represented in the USAF Art Collection. The USAF Art Program had its origins in 1950 with the transfer from the U.S. Army of some 800 works of art documenting the early days of the Army Air Corps., and has grown significantly since then. The database includes reproductions of most, if not all, of the work in the collection.
