Aitchison, Craigie [1926-2009. UK. Painter/Printmaker]

 

John Ronald Craigie Aitchison [commonly known as Craigie Anderson; also known as Craigie Ronald John Aitchison] was born in Edinburgh, Scotland on 13 January 1926. He studied law at Edinburgh University and at the Middle Temple in London. He also studied painting privately in London and in 1952 enrolled part-time at the Slade School of Fine Art, University College London. In 1953 he decided to abandon law and enrolled full-time at the Slade from where he gaduated in 1955. Aitchison died at his home in Kennington, London, on 21 December 2009.

Craigie Aitchison was born 13 January 1926 in Edinburgh. He studied at the Slade School of Fine Art, London (1952-54) where he received a British Council Italian Government scholarship in 1955.

His first one-man exhibition was held in 1959 at the Beaux Arts Gallery, London, with two further shows there in the early 1960s. Subsequent solo exhibitions were held in London and throughout the UK including Marlborough Fine Art (London) Ltd (1968), Compass Gallery, Glasgow (1970), Basil Jacobs Gallery, London (1971), the Knoedler Gallery, London (1977) and Kettle’s Yard, Cambridge (1979). A major retrospective of his work (1953-81) was held at the Serpentine Gallery, London in 1981, with further retrospectives being held at Harewood House, Leeds (1994), and at the Gallery of Modern Art, Glasgow (1996). Aitchison’s work has also been included regularly in group shows throughout the world since 1964.

Among the awards he has received are the Edwin Austin Abbey Premier Scholarship (1965), the Lorne Scholarship (1974-75), Korn Ferry International Award, Royal Academy of Arts (1991), the Jerwood Foundation Award (1994) and the Nordstern Art Prize (2000). Aitchison was elected Royal Academician in 1988 (ARA 1978) and was made CBE in 1999. He lived and worked in London.
